MORE HISTORY TO BE MADE AT CLEARVIEW G.C.
East Canton, Ohio --Golf teams that have not met since they competed in America's first interracial collegiate competition in 1937, will face off once again at Clearview Golf Club, here, April 13. The match, between Ohio schools Wilberforce University of Dayton and Ohio Northern University of Ada is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
Hosting the match will be course designer and owner William Powell, who led Wilberforce, an historically black institution, to victory over Ohio Northern University, a predominately white school, not once but twice 65 years ago.
Powell, the only surviving member of the Wilberforce team of '37 will be joined at Clearview by Hon. Joseph Mallone, a retired judge from Geneva Ohio, who is the only survivor of Ohio Northern's team from that year.
Presidents of both universities will be on hand to see history made yet again when the schools compete at the only course in the world designed, built, owned, and operated by an African American.
"While I was unable to complete my four years at Wilberforce because of health problems, I consider it my alma mater and look forward to welcoming its golf team and that of Ohio Northern to Clearview," says Powell, "Looking forward to the match is bringing back many memories."
Powells daughter, Renee, a veteran of the LPGA tour, is head golf professional at Clearview; her brother, Larry, is course superintendent.
In addition to being a national and state historic site, Clearview is operated under the nonprofit Clearview Legacy Foundation, established in 2001 to fund course renovations and preserve the facility not only because of its significance in golf and American history but as a place for education and research. Donations are being sought to fund the course improvements, locker rooms, and an historic exhibit area.
